C’était au Record Plant, à New York. Le Patti Smith Group travaillait sur son troisième album, Easter, pendant que dans un studio voisin, Bruce Springsteen accumulait les chansons pour Darkness On The Edge Of Time. Les deux artistes partageaient le même producteur, Jimmy Iovine. C’est donc tout naturellement que Springsteen confia à Iovine une chanson inachevée (musique et quelques indications du texte) à l’intention de Patti. Celle-ci écrivit les paroles en une soirée, paroles sensuelles, enflammées…
Il n’en fallait pas plus pour que Patti enregistre avec cette chanson, son plus gros succès commercial, tant en single, qu’avec l’album.
Portée par le piano de Bruce Brody*, Patti nous livre une version sensuelle mais rageuse, presque militante de cette magnifique chanson, poussée par la batterie de Jay Dee Daugherty. Lenny Kaye à la guitare et Ivan Král à la basse ne sont pas en reste, et cette version du Patti Smith Group me semble dominer largement la discographie de “Because The Night”, même si la version de Springsteen plane sur les même hauteurs. Grande chanson !
